Apple App Store sees first ever decline in the number of apps, here's why?

NEW DELHI: Apple App Store is said to be the preferred launchpad for new apps for developers. However, in 2017 Apple App store saw a decline in the total number of apps for the first time ever. According to a report by App Figures, Apple App Store market ‘shrunk’.

The numbers indicate that by the end of last year the App Store recorded a total of 2.1 million iOS apps, which is less than what was actually recorded a year before that. The difference of 0.1 million or 5% was recorded, which may not seem much but is surely a big deal.

“At the end of 2017 there were roughly 2.1 million iOS apps available in the App Store, a decrease of 5% when compared to the 2.2 million apps that were available in the beginning of the year,” said the report by App figures.

The decline is said to come as a result of stricter Apple app review guidelines in addition to the “technical change that eliminated many old apps that were not updated to support 64-bit architecture.”

On the bright side, iOS users have reason to cheer. The introduction of stricter guidelines removed all the malware and fake apps from the platform, making it more secure. Google Play still has clone apps, fake apps and malware.

Furthermore, what led to a decline was that iOS developers released lesser number of apps as compared to Android app developers. While the former released 755k new apps in 2017, Android developers came up with 1.5 million new apps in the same time period.

For Android, this was an increase of about 17% year over year, the largest jump since 2014, while for Apple iOS platform this was a drop of 29%, biggest in 10 years. To top it all the app portability between the two platforms also played an important role in numbers. More than twice iOS apps were ported to Android as compared to the number of apps that were ported from Android to iOS.
