Facebook CEO's this 'request' changed the fortune of both Instagram and Snapchat

NEW DELHI: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has has finally testified in front of 44 senators about the the scandal in which Cambridge Analytica used the massive social platform to access 87 million users. During the process, Zuckerberg accepted his mistakes and that Facebook’s mission is to "help people connect." And no, he's not resigning.

Apart from the confessions made about the Cambridge Analytica, Facebook CEO also revealed that in order to make Instagram a success he copied the popular ‘Stories’ feature of Snapchat.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Zuckerberg asked its engineers to copy the Stories feature of Snapchat in Instagram. The company acquired Instagram in the year 2013 for $715 million and since then he worked for its growth and development.

Quoting a book written by an ex- Facebook employee, the report added that in the 2015, Instagram started facing tough competition from rival Snapchat. In the year, Snapchat rolled out its interesting Stories features which became immensely popular and managed to steal the teen American users of Instagram. The Stories feature of Snapchat allows the users to upload photo and videos on the platform which will disappear after 24 hours of being posted online.

Learning about this, Zuckerberg asked Instagram co-founders Krieger and Systrom to build a similar functionality. Initially they refused to do so, but after more discussions, Zuckerberg convinced them and the Instagram Stories features was rolled out in 2016. Soon, after the roll out the app surpassed Snapchat and the feature was also liked by its users.

Apart from this, in order to expand its user base the app changed its algorithm and also witnessed a revamp with the change in its popular polaroid camera logo.
