How to generate, retrieve your Aadhaar virtual ID number

NEW DELHI: UIDAI or the Unique Identification Authority of India, the nodal agency for issuing 16-digit Aadhaar number, has been lately facing the heat over security concerns for users’ data. To tackle this, UIDAI launched Virtual ID earlier this month. Service providers will soon start accepting this Virtual ID in place of your Aadhaar number.

What is Aadhaar virtual ID number?

Aadhaar Virtual ID is a 16-digit number that can be randomly generated by users and is linked to their 12-digit Aadhaar ID at the backend. The benefit of this is that you can use this 16- digit temporary number for authentication instead of revealing your full Aadhaar information.

A virtual ID has a validity of up to one day and in case you generate a new Aadhaar virtual ID before that, the old one gets cancelled automatically. So this is how you can generate or retrieve one.

How to generate or retrieve Aadhaar virtual ID numbers?

Step 1: Log in to UIDAI’s main website or www.uidai.gov.in.

Step 2: On the website, click on the ‘Virtual ID (VID) Generator’ option seen under ‘Aadhaar services’ section.

Step 3: Clicking on this opens a new UIDAI webpage wherein you need to fill your 12-digit Aadhaar number and write the code shown inside the box.

Step 4: Click on the ‘Send OTP’ option to get a one time password (OTP) to the linked mobile number.
