To notch or not to notch - OnePlus gives you an option

NEW DELHI: Seems OnePlus has 'learnt lessons' from the backlash it received on the notch that its upcoming smartphone OnePlus 6 is said to Earlier this week, the company confirmed the name and some specifications of the yet-to-be launched smartphone.

Recently, Carl Pei company’s co-founder confirmed in an interview that OnePlus 6 will come with an iPhone X-like screen notch. Now, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has shared some more details about the feature. Lau posted on the company’s forum saying that the OnePlus 6 will come with a compatibility mode, which will enable the users to black out the sides of the notch when in landscape mode.

The users can use this feature at the time of playing games or watching videos. He also informed that the company has tested this mode on 1,000 most popular apps in the Play Store and it works fine.

“We believe in offering our community the best possible smartphone experience. By listening to your opinions and feedback, we aim to design smartphones that meet your needs and standards. While many of you have asked us not to increase the physical size of our phones, others requested larger and more immersive displays. The notch helps us accomplish both requests. No two people have the same opinion on smartphone aesthetics. Our focus was to deliver the biggest and best screen we've ever had, without compromising on the tech you love”, reads the post.

The company has not added the feature yet to the smartphone and they decided to so after listening to the feedback. The mode to hide the screen notch will be rolled out as a software update after the launch of OnePlus 6. He also added that the Oxygen OS will also be optimised to work in association with the notch so the users are able to easily view and access all the notifications.

The same feature is already present in the recently launched Huawei P20 and P20 Pro, which also come with screen notch.

As confirmed earlier, the OnePlus 6 will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 processor paired with 8GB of RAM. This time the company will also be introducing the 256GB storage variant of the smartphone.
