BlackBerry suing spree continues: After Facebook, it's Snapchat's turn

It seems like the only reason that BlackBerry comes in news anymore is when it decides to sue another organisation. Within a month of taking Facebook to court, BlackBerry has now slapped a notice on Snapchat's parent company Snap.

As per BlackBerry, Snap is in violation of six patents, which were issued in 2012 and 2014. According to Bloomberg, two of these are also included in the lawsuit against Facebook.

In a statement to Mashable, a BlackBerry spokesperson said, "BlackBerry has a well-earned reputation for protecting and securing our customers’ data and privacy. For more than a year we have been working to establish a dialogue with Snap as we believe there are far more opportunities for partnership than disagreement. While we continue to hold this door open, we also have a strong claim that Snap infringed on our intellectual property, harmed our shareholders, and we have an obligation to pursue appropriate legal remedies."
So far, California-based Snap hasn’t made any comment on the legal suit filed by BlackBerry.

Earlier this year in March, BlackBerry alleged that Facebook and its owned-apps -- WhatsApp and Instagram -- are using messaging capabilities that were first designed by BlackBerry. In a statement the company said, “We have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies.”

According to BlackBerry, there are several features which Facebook has incorporated including showing multiple incoming messages in an inbox, showing an unread message indicator at top of an icon, selecting a photo tag, and now showing timestamps next to every message in a thread.

Back in 2017, BlackBerry also filed a patent case against Nokia alleging that it has used almost a dozen of its inventions without permission. Also, in its royalty dispute against Qualcomm -- which BlackBerry won – the chip maker had agreed to pay BlackBerry $940 million.
