YouTube shooting: Manager's account hacked to spread fake news

NEW DELHI: Vadim Lavrusik, product manager at YouTube, tweeted about being safe during the shooting that occured at YouTube headquarters. However, soon after that his account was hacked and was used to spread fake news.

Lavrusik first tweeted about the active shooting from office in California at 12.57 pm and at about 2.10pm his Twitter account was hacked. Lavrusik tweeted that he was safe and was evacuated and then soon after another tweet was posted from his account reading, "PLEASE HELP ME FIND MY FRIEND I LOST HIM IN THE SHOOTING".

The tweet consisted of a Flipboard URL linked to a photo of Keemstar, a YouTube personality.

Then after three minutes another tweet came which read, "my name is so gay honestly."

However, the tweets were soon deleted and since then there have been no tweets from Lavruik's account. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey also commented on the issue and said that platform is working on the issue and will soon fix it.

A woman opened fire at YouTube headquarters setting off a panic situation among the employees. Four people were injured in the shooting and the shooting suspect is a woman who is said to have later died due to self-inflicted wounds. Hundreds of Google employees were evacuated by emergency teams. Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent an email to the company's employees worldwide over the incident. In the mail, he described the shooting as "horrific act of violence."

Google, which owns the world's biggest online video website, posted on Twitter that the company was coordinating with authorities. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it also responded.
