While travelling, not knowing the local language may be one of the
biggest barriers. And this is not necessarily the case when you are
travelling internationally. India being a diverse land of various
languages, one may feel like they are in a foreign land within the
country. As is the case with most other problems, there is an app for it
or rely on the buzzword “Google it”. For translation, the app Google Translate
that can solve this issue. The latest update of the app just makes it
easier to use the app in parts of the country, where you may find
yourself unable to communicate in the local language.
While there has already been offline support for 7 local Indian languages -- Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu -- since last year, the new update allows instant camera translation support when viewing in offline mode.
The latest version of Google Translate 5.18.0.RC03 on Play Store lists that the new update offers, "Offline translation, including instant camera translation from English, for more languages (Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu). Minor bug fixes. Improved stability."
At the time of filing this story, we were not able to use the camera translation in an offline mode even though there is no new update available. However, it shouldn't be long before this feature is available.

To use offline translations, the user needs to download the specific language pack from the “Translate” app when connected to the Internet.
