How to use WhatsApp in your local language

In the last few years, WhatsApp has become one of the most important tool of communication. With 200 million-plus active users, India is the biggest market for Facebook-owned instant messaging app. The country's favourite chat app supports as many as 10 local Indian languages. These include Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam.

Wonder how one can use WhatsApp in these langauges. Here's an step-by-step guide.

To change the language within the app, here's what you need to do:

1. Open WhatsApp

2. Tap on the menu button

3. Go to Settings

4. Head to Chat and open App Language

3. Choose the language of your choice from the Popup that appears.

4. Depending on your phone's capabilities, the list may include: English, Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam. Select the language of your choosing.


However, readers must note as a general rule, WhatsApp follows the language of the phone. For instance, if you change your phone's language to Hindi, then WhatsApp will automatically be in Hindi. However, depending on whether your handset runs on Android or iOS you may have to follow a little different procedure.

On Android phones:

1. Open Settings app

2. Tap on 'Languages and Input'

3. Open Languages

4. Select the language you want to choose

5. Open WhatsApp and find all text appearing in that language

On Apple iPhones:

1. Open Settings app

2. Tap on General

3. Go to Language & Region

4. Select iPhone Language

5. Select the language you want to choose.

6. Open WhatsApp and find all text appearing in that language.
